Lipolysis

What is injection lipolysis?

Lipolysis injections involve the chemical reduction of fat cells around an injection site.  Deoxycholate (DC)-commonly known as Kybella- or compounded Phosphatidylcholine (PPC)/Sodium Deoxycholate are currently FDA approved for treatment of moderate to severe submental fat in the chin area in adults.

Phosphatidycholine (a phospholipid) and sodium decoycholate (a bile acid) are found naturally in the body in cells. When properly injected, Kybella or compounded Phosphatidylcholine/Sodium Deoxycholate destroys fat cells.

What are the risks of injection lipolysis?

Complications are uncommon and may include nerve injury that can result in an uneven smile. In rare instances, patients have also reported difficulty swallowing after the procedure.

Post injection lipolysis

Though there is no downtime, patients may experience swelling, bruising, pain, redness and feel areas of hardness that typically soften with time. Swelling can take 2-3 weeks to subside and the area can look fuller after treatment. Multiple treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are typically needed for maximum effect. Fat reduction is typically visible in 6-8 weeks as the fat cells are destroyed and the inflammation subsides. Results are long lasting unless the patient gains weight, causing an increase in the number and size of fat cells.
