Sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a fast and minimally invasive medical procedure used to effectively treat spider veins or telangiectasias. These veins are tiny veins that constantly look dilated. They are mostly found on the legs and many people often find themselves very self conscious about it. It’s often considered the treatment of choice for these smaller varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution, typically called a sclerosant directly into the vein. This solution irritates the blood vessel lining, causes the vein to scar and forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.

After sclerotherapy, treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take a month or more to see the full results. In some instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed. Sessions are scheduled several weeks to a month apart in order to ensure full healing before the next session. The results are permanent as the treated veins are destroyed and absorbed back into the body. However, sclerotherapy will not stop new veins from growing.
